Invisalign FAQs
Read the answers to our most frequently asked questions.
-
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a series of clear, custom-fitted aligners designed to gradually straighten your teeth without the need for metal wires or brackets.
The aligners are smooth, removable, and virtually invisible, making them a comfortable and discreet alternative to traditional braces.
Using advanced imaging technology during the consultation process, we will create a treatment plan based on your unique smile.
A series of custom clear aligners will then be manufactured to fit your teeth precisely during each stage of the Invisalign treatment process.
-
How does the Invisalign process work?
Invisalign clear plastic aligners are designed to move your teeth in tiny increments as your treatment progresses. You will wear each aligner for a certain number of days before it is replaced by the next one in the series.
This process will continue until your teeth are in their desired positions. The duration of your Invisalign treatment will be determined by your dentist based on your specific needs.
-
How long does Invisalign treatment take?
Your dentist will decide how long your Invisalign treatment should last, depending on your individual needs.
Factors that may determine the duration of your treatment include tooth or jaw misalignment, the shape of your bite, and the amount of movement required to correct the problem.
-
What are Invisalign aligners made of?
Invisalign aligners are manufactured using USP Class VI medical-grade, high–molecular weight polyurethane resins, which are specifically selected for their safety, durability, and biocompatibility in dental applications.
-
How often do I have to visit the dentist?
Since Invisalign aligners require no adjustments or tightening – you simply switch to a new set of aligners as outlined by your dentist – your dentist will schedule brief appointments with you approximately every four to six weeks, as needed.
During these appointments, your dentist will review your progress and overall oral health, answer your questions, and adjust your treatment as needed.
-
What are the primary features of Invisalign?
Invisalign offers a variety of features designed to give you a comfortable and effective teeth-straightening experience, including:
- A discreet, low-profile appearance
- Smooth construction for enhanced comfort
- Do not require adjustment appointments
- Removable for eating, brushing and flossing
-
How much does Invisalign cost?
The cost varies based on your case's severity and treatment length. For example, more severe malocclusions require more aligners, increasing the overall treatment cost.
In many cases, the cost of Invisalign is comparable to that of traditional orthodontic treatment (braces).
-
How will Invisalign fit my lifestyle?
Many patients discover that Invisalign comfortably integrates into their daily routines.
You will take your aligners out whenever you need to eat or drink, brush, or floss. That means no additional dietary restrictions, and you'll be able to brush and floss thoroughly and consistently.
-
Are there any food or drink restrictions?
Invisalign aligners are removable, allowing you to take them out when eating. This means there are no extra dietary restrictions with Invisalign, so you can keep enjoying all your favourite foods!
To avoid staining your clear aligners and potentially damaging your teeth, we recommend removing the aligners when you consume any beverages other than regular water.
-
How many sets of aligners will I need?
The answer to this question really depends on how severe your misalignment is.
Your dentist can give you an accurate estimate of how many aligners you will need based on a careful evaluation of your tooth position during an initial consultation.
-
Can adults use Invisalign?
Yes! Anyone with healthy teeth and gums can be a good candidate for Invisalign.
A greater number of adults are choosing to undergo orthodontic treatment nowadays, largely due to the availability of options like Invisalign.
-
Can teenagers use Invisalign?
Yes! Teens can definitely be candidates for Invisalign. In fact, Invisalign has developed a special line of aligners designed specifically for teenagers.
Invisalign Teen aligners have compliance indicators (small blue dots that fade after the aligners have been worn enough) to help teens stay on track with their treatment.
They also feature eruption tabs that accommodate second molars and help prevent crooked growth.
-
How often do I have to change my Invisalign aligners?
Most patients switch to their next set of aligners approximately every two weeks. Your dentist will advise you on the specific timing for changing your aligners.
-
How do I clean my aligners?
- Rinse your aligners each time you remove them to wash away dry saliva and plaque that can contribute to dental decay and bad breath.
- Soak your aligners as needed with denture cleaner, Retainer Brite, or the official Invisalign cleaning crystals.
- Brush and floss before reinserting aligners to maintain oral hygiene, prevent cavities, decay, and bad breath. Neglecting proper cleaning traps food and bacteria, increasing dental issues.
- Use a transparent anti-bacterial soap to clean your aligners. This type of soap is an effective and affordable option to maintain your aligners' clarity, freshness, and hygiene by eliminating harmful bacteria.
- Brush your aligners gently to avoid scratching them, then rinse off the soap. Then you're done!
-
Can I play sports with Invisalign?
Invisalign aligners are removable, so you can play sports without worrying about damaging them.
However, keep in mind that Invisalign aligners must be worn for at least 22 hours a day, so plan your time carefully.
It is also advisable to use a sports mouth guard to protect your teeth, since orthodontic treatment can cause your teeth to loosen slightly as they move into new positions, increasing the risk of damage.
-
Can I play my instrument with Invisalign?
Yes! Just take out your aligners when you need to practice your instrument, then put them back in afterward.
-
How do I store my aligners?
Your Invisalign aligners will come with a case, and this is where you should put them when you take them out to keep them safe. Since the aligners are made of plastic, you should avoid leaving them in hot areas, as they could deform or melt.
